Abstract

The role of the “flaneuse” has been widely debated, with many arguments formed in a reflective post-modern context around where she may be located historically. Researchers have argued to varying degrees about where she can be found, where she’s been erased or whether she even exists. It seems that it is almost as hard to pin her down as it is to locate statues of, and streets named after women in cities across the world. From Sarah Morris to Julie Mehretu to Rose Salane, contemporary woman artists continue to engage with public urban space in new and valuable ways, their work often highlighting the complexity of the subject in nuanced or explicit approaches.
