Abstract

In this dissertation I will examine the diasporic experience through W.E.B. Du Bois’ Double Consciousness theory, whilst looking to Ying Xu’s Across Lands theory to trace the historical experience of personal and cultural identity formation for early Chinese literary immigrants within America between 1847-1910s. Building upon diasporic theories and concepts [of existing in a state in which an individual can, and must embody a split sense of self when establishing their identity within a different culture - double consciousness theory], I aim to contribute to an understanding of the nuances of assimilation and amalgamation within present-day society and culture, in particular for those of mixed-raced /mixed-heritage; those who must navigate multiple worlds and ideas of self, in a sense and state of undefinable fluidity.
