Abstract

My practice today is a story of negotiation over the last year, from passive to active resistance and articulating this within my art. Fuelled by frustration and despair, I am exposing the feeling of being inside the belly of Jonah’s whale, surrounded and projected upon by the various algorithms dominating my life. My saferoom gives me space for my thoughts to be extrapolated and shared with others. The media’s algorithm has an insidious power and has resulted in feeling projected upon because of my religious identity, marginalised and ‘othered’ – something I need to express, outside of my own echo chamber. It is as if my reality is controlled by something outside of me, that thinks they know me, and I have become subjected to that logic and not in control of it. My saferoom allows me to share my personal protest in a way that raises consciousness and communicates my expression of resistance. This document highlights my allies that have enabled me to create this, and a key book has been Ursula K Le Guin and her tale ‘The Carrier Bag of Fiction’ that has made me aware of the notion of ‘Containers’ as a mode of expression.
