Abstract

The lyrics from “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life” by Indeep plays in my head when I’m asked about my artistic process. Rehab was not enough to keep me from falling off the rails and in NA (Narcotics Anonymous) I tried to follow the 12-Step program but being an atheist made it hard to fill in the “faith” gaps of the program’s rhetoric. It wasn't until I started making sculptures in ceramics that I found a new kind of escapism to obsess over, you could say ceramics saved my life. [...] After realizing what worked for me on my road to recovery, I've decided to write my own personal 12-Step program as a recovering drug addict with a newfound “faith” in clay, since the original was written in the 1930’s by some alcoholic Christian men. I hope one day this might help others with similar conflicting interests.
